“Fusang” is the name the Chinese use to refer to Japan, which literally indicates a legendary tree in the Chinese mythology related to the sun. This fact is noted down in the book Lương thư  written by Diêu Tư Liêm in the year 635. The Japanese later on accepted this name. However, since the 18th century, a lot of Western scholars believe that Phù Tang indicates Mexico, and the birth of the name is in connection with the discovery of  America. This is a controversial hypothesis and has not been generally agreed on. The name “Japan” is often used in the Chinese official books of history since the Đường Dynasty.
